In the dynamic world of dietetics, NDTRs take center stage as vital contributors, playing key roles in promoting health and wellness across various settings.


What is a DTR?

Apart from the RD credential,  the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) provides the Nutrition & Dietetic Technician, Registered (NDTR/DTR) credential. DTRs thrive in diverse settings, from food service management to clinical nutrition care, opening doors for career advancement in dietetics and nutrition


DTRs in the Workplace

DTR roles, outlined by the CDR website, include aiding in nutrition care delivery, implementing dietary plans, conducting assessments, and offering support in healthcare and community settings. Their expertise in nutrition and dietetics plays a pivotal role in promoting health and wellness.


DTR Positions:

  • Clinical Hospital/Acute Care

  • Clinical Long-Term Care

  • Food Service Manager (hospital, school)

  • School Nutrition & Wellness Coordinator

  • Supermarket/Retail

  • WIC Health Professional

Eligibility & Education Requirements

Option 1: Associate Degree

  1. Complete an Associate degree granted by an accredited university recognized by the U.S. Dept of Education

  2. Completion of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition & Dietetics (ACEND) Accredited Dietetic Technician Program (minimum of 450 supervised practice hours).

Option 2: Bachelor’s Degree & DPD

  1. Completion of a Bachelor’s degree granted by a university accredited by the U.S. Dept of Education

  2. Completion of an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)

The DTR Exam

The exam is scheduled and administered by Pearson VUE at a Pearson testing center. 

It covers three domains:

  1. Nutrition Science & Care for Individuals & Groups 41%

  2. Food Science & Food Service 21%

  3. Management of Food & Nutrition Services 38%


Maintaining DTR Credential

Yearly Requirements

  • Maintain current contact information with CDR

  • Pay yearly registration maintenance fee

5-year Cycle Requirements

  • Complete required CPEUs (50)

  • One Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEU) must be related to ethics
